Dos Plumas Ranch "The Working Man's Ranch"
Last year at one of the industry trade shows I met Allen Williams, owner of Dos Plumas Ranch. I meet many Guides and Landowners at these shows so it gets hard sometimes to remember who is who. Over the next months I was asked by several people about a place that called itself, "The Workings Man's Ranch," located 30 miles West of Abilene, near Trent & Sweetwater, TX. When I looked them up on the internet, I saw their the name Dos Plumas Ranch and that made me dig through my business cards until I found Allen's card. After a phone conversation, we decided that I should come out opening weekend of Spring Turkey Season to see the place, meet him and his family, and interview six hunters he had scheduled. As you can tell by the photos below, we had a great time. But then again, don't you usually have a great time when you are outside enjoying springtime in Texas? Well, that is true, but let me share with you why this trip was so interesting and enjoyabe... 1. I like to eat. Allen's wife likes to cook. They live onsite and make you feel like part of their family. 2. I like simple, but clean hunting quarters so that you can get your rest and focus on hunting without distraction. Allen provided a very simple, clean, hunter's cabin with everything you need. 3. I like seeing animals when I walk a ranch - regardless of whether or not I shoot. Dos Plumas has turkey gobbling, whitetail snorting, hogs grunting, and a herd of Fallow and Blackbuck, not to mention a group of Catalina, Merino, and Corsican Rams walking the land. 4. The extras are always nice. Allen designed and built the Cleaning Station, Firepit, and Rifle Range with the thought process of someone who takes great pride in doing the best they can. In addition, I found it very interesting to talk to the six hunters about where they came from and why they choose Dos Plumas Ranch. Group 1: Three young men from Wisconsin, who drove a very long way for their first Texas Hunting experience. The amount of research they did and why they decided to come to Dos Plumas Ranch made me understand why Allen's passion to provide an affordable, yet enjoyable hunting experience is such a good idea. Group 2: A repeat client from Maryland brought his son (fresh out of the US Marine Corp) for his first Spring Turkey Hunt. They were bubbling with excitement. Sadly, the father became quite sick with the flu, but that didn't stop Allen from making sure the son got several opportunities to harvest a big Tom. Group 3: A solo client, a Vet from Louisiana, came to hunt. He had heard good things from friends so he felt he could trust to have a good experience - which he did. Bottom line, if you are looking to shoot the biggest animal you have ever shot, this place probably isn't for you. However, they did shoot a potential world record turkey this year. If you are looking for a great "hunt" for good quality animals, with really nice quarters, you really don't need to look further until you have experienced Dos Plumas Ranch. Also, if you are considering bringing out a friend or family member who is new to rifle or bow hunting, or you want to introduce a child to hunting, you will find the owners patient, informative, and truly concerned that you have a great experience. Of all the places I have been, Allen Williams has created a hunting experience that is at the top of my list to recommend to others. I've hunt several places but this place is far above them all. I took my son both time I went and he won't stop asking when we are going back. Allen really takes care of you and really makes it fun for kids to hunt.
