Hunting Russian Boar at the Boar Creek Ranch with Kelly Garmon
The stands Karen and I would be hunting were close to each other so we set out. The walk through the lush foliage was a pleasure all of its own, the towering trees offering cover for the underlying growth to flourish. We easily found the River stand and got the video camera setup and the rifle loaded and ready. I continued on to the Jeter stand and was only there about 30 minutes when a lone boar came in. He was to the right of the stand as he approached and the swirling wind took my scent to him before he was anywhere near in position for me to draw the bow. Over the next couple of hours, I saw over 20 different hogs but was victimized by the wind and never got a shot. As darkness fell under the thick green canopy, I climbed down and went to pick Karen up. When I got to her stand, there were a swarm of hogs under the feeder! I asked why she hadn't shot and she replied that she was not sure how big they were and it was getting dark so we loaded the camera up and went back to camp. Every hunter in camp had seen a number of hogs but everyone was waiting for Hogzilla. When we showed Nick the video, he was astounded that she had not taken one of the really big hogs the camera had captured! This was Karen's first hog hunt and Nick gave her some pointers as to what to look for it identify a BIG hog. Saturday morning was slow for the hog action so everyone was back at camp for a great breakfast at 9:30. The food was outstanding all weekend, Kelly sure can cook! During the day everyone spent time fishing and visiting a local bow shop which has 4 different 3 D ranges. The Friday rains had muddied the water in the lake so fishing was a little slow, but a couple of nice black bass were caught. Karen took the time to relax on the deck and catch up on some reading. Finally it was time for the afternoon hunt and Karen and I returned to the stands we had been in on Friday. I was in my stand no time at all when I heard the 'CRACK' of Karen's rifle. The radio came alive immediately, "I dropped one!" I went back to her stand and saw a BIG hog laying on the ground. We immediately went back to camp and Nick and Lance took the 4 wheeler to pick the hog up. As they were coming back across the dam with the hog on the front of the 4 wheeler, I thought of the ground shrinkage a whitetail seems to suffer from. Well, hogs seem to have ground growth, this hog was bigger than I thought! What do you think? Sunday morning had everyone except Marshall and myself sleeping in and Marshall came back in with a nice hog in the truck. All in all, an outstanding weekend meeting new friends and spending time in the woods! I highly recommend you give Kelly and Nick a call if you are looking for a great hunt where you will see a ton of hogs! I can't wait to return!
