A few of us headed to a tropical wilderness between Corsicana and Palestine seeking the Texas grizzly.  This area was so wild I could not believe I was in Texas.  Thick woods with plants of all kinds in the wettest environment I've ever seen in this great state.  Tucked away inside this wilderness is Boar Creek Ranch home to many wild hogs with Russian characteristics – and that's what I was after.

I started Friday evening hiking into my stand.  On the way I even scared up to right inside the thick brush.  One must have been no more than 15 feet away, but there is no chance in seeing that far through this lush landscape.  I found my way over to my nice box blind known as “Snake Blind,” but I was not about to ask Kelly or Nick where the name originated.

After about 30 minutes I heard a couple hogs wandering through the brush about 50 yards out.  They messed around and then moved on.  Soon afterwards two more came into the feeder and then two more.  All four were about 125lbs with two being more feral with the splotched coloring.  I held tight and watched.

Behind me there was a 3 or 4 acre field which I caught a glimpse of a large hog making his way through.  It was getting dark under those tall trees so I decided to move toward the field and see if there was any action.  I spotted the large hog and noticed it was with another younger one.  I got within 15 yards wishing I had my bow and they snorted and took off in the other direction, luckily not mine.

As I made my way around the field I must have seen 15 more hogs out in this opening within range, but I decided to hold off until the next day.  We met back at the really comfortable cabins with news that Chuck, another hunter down from La Porte, had shot a nice boar with his black powder and even caught an 8 pound bass afterwards!  Congratulations Chuck!

We gathered around the dinner table and were served some NY Strip steaks, loaded potatoes and brownies for dessert.  I don't think I've had better!

Saturday morning came quick (and early).  I was hiking into my stand again and scared up at least 4 hogs off in the brush. That was a rush in itself.  There were plenty of trees to climb, but I still had to outrace the hog.  I walked up on the stand and heard snorting right away.  Nick had told me the hogs would be there when I got there.  He is good!

I moved on up to my stand and stayed still, waiting for more light so I could see the hogs better.  When that light came I saw two nice sized hogs, but they were not the Russian type. I waited about another 45 minutes watching them finish off their breakfast.

I caught a glimpse of a pure black Russian making his way through the woods behind them. There was only one opening through the woods he was about to go right into, so I got ready real quick.  As he entered the 10 foot opening I squeezed the trigger.  He went running through the brush and came back to the same opening to lay down.  He was mine.

I returned to camp to have the hog cleaned and a full blown breakfast. Kelly was the greatest cook!

Unfortunately, I had to end my trip early, but I will for sure be returning to the Boar Creek to chase more of the elusive Texas grizzy!

Thanks for a great time Nick and Kelly. You two are great hosts and I look forward to seeing you again soon.  You can find out more about the Boar Creek at http://www.boarcreek.com/.

Don't forget to mention you found them here at www.TexasHuntFish.com and you'll get an extra $25 off your trip!
