Texas Big Game Awards Adds Bighorns and Javelina To Species Categories

San Antonio – Celebrating sixteen year’s this hunting season, the Texas Big Game Awards (TBGA), a partnership of Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) and the Texas Wildlife Association (TWA), continues to be the leader in recognizing the contributions that landowners, land managers and responsible hunters make to managing and conserving wildlife and wildlife habitat on Texas’ private lands. 

The Texas Big Game Awards program is designed to recognize 1) the quality of big game animals in Texas, 2) the hunters who harvest these animals, 3) the land managers who produce these animals through their management efforts, 4) the importance of our hunting heritage, and 5) the achievements of young and new hunters.

This hunting season the TBGA has added two new categories:

Javelina – This category will be for the Youth Division and First Big Game Harvest division only.  For those youth hunters and first-time hunters who harvest a Javelina from September 2006 to March 2007, will be able to receive a TBGA certificate.  There is no scored category for Javelina.

Desert Bighorn – This is a “recognition only” category whereby the TBGA will award recognition certificates to those hunters and landowners/land managers where sheep are harvested.  This is a non-scored, non-ranked category.  The re-introduction of Desert Bighorn is a great success story and the TBGA wants to recognize the habitat managers and hunters for their support of this Texas big game species.
