1955 Winchester Model 94 30/30
My dad purchased this gun and he gave it to me back in 1973 at the age of 14. I have killed several deer with it over the years. I have kept it as original and perfect as possible.
With eyes going bad, I purchased scope rings for it last year, but could not force myself to put them on. I think this gun looks sooo dumb with the side scope, I'll just have to use prescription glasses.
Due to a car wreck at the age of eight, my neck is fused in a whip-lash position. This has caused a lot of nerve damage in my neck and with age I'm having difficulties with my hands, elbows and shoulders. Caring or holding a gun or anything for any length of time is getting harder and harder. I really want this 30/30 to be my main gun on an upcoming hunt in West Texas for Aoudad / Hog and Lion, so I had to break-down and put the sling on it. This will give my arms a break during hiking trips.
I also purchased 3 boxes of the new Hornady "LEVERevolution" 160 gr Evolution; LEVERevolution read the Reviews. Muzzle; 2400 fps; 100 yds +3.0"; 200 yds .0.2"; 300 yds -12.1"
I purchased some the the CCI; MAXI-MAG HP+P; 30 gr. JHP @ 2200 fps. Looks like regular HP's. Also purchased some of the CCI; 22 MAXI MAG TNT; 30 gr. JHP @ 2200 fps. These have a heck of a HP; big, wide and deep. These will make some excellent small predator loads.
Playing flashlight tag in a pasture with kids two years ago, I hyper extended my knee. I stepped into a hole and DANG that hurt. It took a year of healing before the pain went away, but it is weak. I usually use a walking stick while hunting or hiking, so today, I purchased a "Shooters Ridge-- Deluxe Stalk Stick" Stalk-Stick . I think it is going to work well for both a walking stick and shooting stick.
I'm sure getting excited about this trip. Jerry, William and I always have a super time together.

I agree with not wanting to put a side scope on it as I have a Winchester 94 30-30 like yours but made in 1971 (top eject as well). It was smoke stained in a fire so I am going to get a gunsmith to clean it and reblue it. Like you, I have to wear prescription glasses (contacts mostly). I am going to put either ghost rings or a buckhorn sight on it so I can sight a little better than the v-notch already on it. This is something you may think about if you are not too set on keeping everything original. Those kind of sights, in my opinion, don't detract from the original looks of the rifle. Good luck...

Strange how this site becomes addictive. I am busy preparing for an important meeting at 10am. Instead, I got distracted by this post and had to go open my gun safe and get out one of my favorite guns.
This gun was was bought by my great-grandfather at the Crockett General Store in 1898. He gave it to my grandfather. He gave it to my father. He gave it to me. I have shot many targets and animals with this gun.
I think I wrote a post last summer about the gunsmith telling me that unless I wanted to change out an original part, this gun had lived a full life and it was ready to retire. Think about that. How many times does a gun - that has been well taken care of - literally get fired until it is worn down. We are not talking about firing pins, they have been replaced over the years. We are talking about the gun literally is worn down.
Anyway. My father has the original receipt in his files. The gun served my family for food, protection, and entertainment for 108 years.

Did you mount a sling, or get one of those that wraps around the stock and barrel?

Bobby, You're going to kick my butt, but I drilled a hole in the stock and mounted the stud. The other is a clamp on the tube. I had tried the wrap slings, that I use on my shotgun, but didn't like it.
Jason, I remembered the journal on your 30/30. That is a sweet old gun and what a family heirloom. I'm glad that you took the time to share. Hope your meeting went well.
I wish that I could continue to hand carry it, but I have no feeling in my hands to operate the gun when the time to hunt is there. The pinched nerve creates a burning sensation and my hands have a dead ache with no finger tip feelings. That is why I just had to go to the sling.

Jason,
in the second pic of your gun, is that a storage tube on the forend? If so, what is it used for: extra bullets, cleaning rod, etc.
You bringing out your gun reminded me of one such gun that I have in my small collection. It is a Winchester Model 1866 that belonged to my great-great-great grandfather. He bought it in 1883 and it has remained in the family since then. There is story behind this gun and maybe I will recount it in the journals.

Country that is a beautiful gun, my great grandpa has a Marlin 30/30 and it is probably my favorite gun of all time.

Country,
In reply to your answer that you have a buckhorn sight on your 30/30 already, I meant the full buckhorn (it looks like 2 horns curving to almost, but not quite, meet at the top); it kind of almost looks like a ghost ring but more western style.

Those are some sweet guns. My first deer rifle was a Marlin 30/30, but I grew up in the thick woods of Georgia and South Carolina.
Those older lever action rifles really look great.
