Hog/Coyote/Varmit Questions

Well, I've found a place to do some free hog, coyote and other varmit hunting so I'd like y'alls opinions on which weapon to use. This place is pretty wooded so I would imagine that most of the shooting will be pretty short range (within at least 100yds).

My available choices are:

  • .22LR Bolt Action Rifle, scope
  • 12 Gauge Pump Action Shotgun
  • 65lb Compound bow with broadheads

so...with those choices in mind what is y'alls opinion?

My second question was if anybody knew any good baiting methods for hogs or coyotes. I have free reign on this land so I'd like to make my chances as good as possible.

thanks in advance for the advice.

Coyote - Any urine w/ Testosterone in it (preferable Fox or Coyote)

Hogs - Maize or corn mixed Beer or Water put in 5 gallon bucket Cover it with Tarp or something Don't fill to the top it will rize and let it sit for a week or two and sour - take a shovel dig a hole and fill it up put the dirt back in and watch em tear that area up.

Weapon I would go with a 22 but gun of choice would be a .243 that 22 not gonna take a hog down (might make em make some funny noises)

COYOTE Okay. If I put this recepie for soured corn are they gonna keep comin back once it's all gone? Like I don't want this to cause the land owner to have a large re-occuring problem or anything.

And the urine for coyotes, does dog or human urine work? I can't think of a way to get fox or coyote urine offhand ;-)

Thanks for the reply Thomas.

You should be able to buy the attractant at any store where they sell hunting supplies.  Get one of those cheap electronic calls at wal-mart.

Guns don't kill people....Its those pesky little bullets making lots of holes that all the blood leaks out of.

Oh yeah, for the hogs I would go with the bow.  For the coyotes, use the shotgun with some buckshot, not really a preferable varmint gun but hey if its all ya got use it.

Hogs root evrywhere if he has them they are tearing his place up anyway ask him where he would mind you putting it out. What it will do is airate the soil and well as fertilize the ground. they will probably check the area routinely. Oh ya the slugs is a great Idea uses those for your Dogs and Hogs.

i would use rifled slugs in your shotgun. good to about 75 yards and really fairly accurate. big enough for the hogs. coyote can be taken with 22 but shot placement is the key.

For the hogs I would go with the compound or the shotgun. I'm sure it's a smoothbore so just use regular slugs.

thank you all for the replies and help.

I'm having trouble finding smoothbore slugs. I don't have a rifled barrel for my shotgun and all I can find at the bass pro website is rifled-barrel slugs.

I'll be goin out this next weekend. I'll post pics if I get anything!

I have used Lightfield and Remington copper solids for years, they are about $13 for a box of five, so I don't know about the "rifled slug"s.

The slugs might be grooved (rifled) for use in a smoothbore. I saw Cabelas has winchester rifled slugs for $3.99 a box.  Those are probably the ones you want.  I would ask the salesman.

sounds like a good idea george. only problem is that we've got dogs on that land too...i bet they'd eat it before the coyotes got to it haha. i'll see if we can't do somehting about that...i'll be out there this weekend!

yes, the slugs i meant are rifled themselves so that they will create rotation in a smoothebore. only shoot through a wide choke though, nothing tighter than improved cylinder

I would use the bow for hogs.  Capt. George is right, leave all the left overs on the ground for coyotes.  Hunt on the guts at night with a light.  Try to get around fifty yards away.  I would use your shot gun for coyotes.  But a extra full choke and shoot #4 buckshot.  Trust me it will reach 50 yards.  I like corn and diesel mixture for hogs.

Good luck and live life at Full Draw

well, i tried the beer soured corn bait two days in a row and didnt see any activity. it just sat out there. I know they got hogs out there so any other suggestions for baits?

I'm using my compound bow and a 12 ga with 3in slugs. Thats really all I got to work with anyway...
