Protein Feeder Pen Size

Anyone know how much room you need to have inside a pen for a protein feeder.  I have heard that if the pen is too small, the big bucks may not use it.  However, using hog panels, it can get expensive.  Is 60' x 60' large enough?  I would think limiting the height to 3' would help.  Any input would be appreciated.

I had to cut one down this year because the deer did not like it. It was 20x20.

Keep yer eyes peeled!

I use a 32' x 32' square pen out of 30" tall hog panels and have no problems with deer using it out in west Texas.

the bigger the better.  Anything you can do to cut down on the hierarchy that exists at these feeders is a good thing.   Bigger penned areas allow more deer to be closer and to possibly access the feeders, even when dominant deer are there.  Small enclosures will make the more submissive deer stay outside of them and lessen their opportunities to feed.

The more you try to restrict other non target animals from getting feed, the more you are restricting the feed to your target animals.

What I do is where I DO have pens I try to make sure that I have a feeder outside so fawns can get to it.  There isn't anything worse than driving around in JULY and finding 2 dead fawns a weekend hanging in your hog panel feeder pen fences.

Thanks for the advice.  I have seen many deer that have been caught up in the top strand of barb wire on fences, but have not seen any hung up in hog panels before.  Is a 3' tall hog panel with 4" squares a big risk to the fawns in the summer?  2 dead fawns a week would obviously not be acceptable.   One option would be to drop the panels early in the summer when the oryx and black buck are not guzzling at the protein feeder.

That's what my pens are 3' tall 4" square, and I find quite a few fawns in them.  I run a decently high density on my place though, so % wise it is pretty low.  There are lots of pitfalls out there for fawns.

Exotics are a different issue that I don't have to deal with on my place.  I am mainly trying to stop hogs from eating a ton of protein.

If I had it to do over again, I would probably not build big feeder pens of hog panels, but just enclose them with a regular cattle fence, top and bottom strand slick wire... middle two barbed to keep cattle out when I have them.

We keep the hogs pretty much under control by shooting them out of the Helicopter when we run our surveys so the loss should be mimimized by low hog numbers.

Sounds like you dont have that option because of exotics.
