First off all let me say great state to be in. I have lived here for about 5 weeks and love it. I come from the North (yes another dang yankee) and have hunted all my life there (over 25 years hunting) but I do understand things are a bit different down here, so I have a couple questions if you don't mind:
1. What do recommend to get started hunting some hogs? I do not at this time have land or many contacts since I jsut moved, so is there state areas or places you can recommend?
2. Any other tips to getting started? I live in the Katy area
3. I would like to join a hunting or fishing organization to help preserve good hunting and give back to this state from the get go, any recommendations?
Thanks for your time

Hey Bryon. Welcome to Texas. Hope you're enjoying the heat. lol.
Try visiting Texas Outdoor Partners website. From there you can get a taste of the many, many hunting and fishing organizations the state has to offer.
Hope this helps.

Welcome Byron,
I think you will find this place a pleasant forum and very informative. If you like hunting hogs your in the right place. There is a place in Centerville up I45 from you that has a pretty good hunt at a reasonable price, i cannot remember the name at the moment though. It's even possible to find a rancher/farmer or 2 that will let you hunt piggies gratis. Plus there is hundreds of thousands of acres of national parks within an hours drive of you. Also, if you have never done so..the duck, quail and dove hunting is fantastic, and extremely addictive.

I think Big Mike is talking about Danny Smith, Smith Ranch, near Centerville for hog hunting. He is listed on this site under guides.
Otherwise, welcome to Texas and to TexasHuntFish.com

Thanks Dan, MIke and Jason,
1.are there maps or more information regaurding the state parks?
2. Is there any farmer/hunter cooperation information available? Meaning there were some programs that my former state had that hooked up hunters and farmers who wanted hunters. made it easier for both sides.
Thanks
Bryon

Bryon, I also live in Katy. Been here for over 2yrs and love this state!!
You'll either need to wait the 6 months to get a resident license or buy a non-resident licence for the first year. I waited and bought the lifetime license upfront. A very good investment IMO. Send me an e-mail when you get a chance. I've hunted the SHNF and a few other places for hogs/ deer. Make sure you put somethng dealing w/ hunting in the subject so my wife don't think it is spam. Another welcome Bryon. At least you got to Texas. Many never do. You have some good fishing just west of you on Fayette County. The gulf is really good in the summertime for trout (spotted sea trout or weakfish is what yankees call them). SHNF has a few areas that have an abundance of pigs. There are quite a few deer but quality is hard to come by. Davey Crockett has better quality but fewer deer. The fall will be great for fishing for just about anything you want and it even gets better in winter for some species.

Welcome to this paradise on Earth! You can hunt anywhere in Texas and still find plenty of game. I would recommend going West because there are lots of deer, pigs, and turkey. The first thing you do is set up a feeder and trail camera. Set up a feeder pen around it in case the landowner has cattle. If there are hogs in the area, they will find it. Do not get a gravity feeders because the hogs and deer will sit there and eat all night, draining your feeders and not coming out in shooting light. If you are concerned only with hogs this is fine because you can sit out with a spotlight and hunt them whenever you want.

Bryon, are you still looking for a place to hog hunt? It won't be long till your 6 months residency is over and you can get a resident licence. e-mail me when you're ready to go. Have a few places we've been hunting hogs on and they are free (SHNF) or $100/ day free ranging. No guarantees on either ofcourse.
BTW, I'm heading to the Langley Ranch the end of Feb also and it is a fenced ranch. So, the chances of killin' a hog is greater.

Bob,
Welcome to the Texas heat and Mosquiters. If you want to go on a guided hunt there is a place in Centerville TX north on I-45, Smith's Hog Hunting Ranch. It is full of Big hogs some over 800lbs., deer, gators, ducks, two fully furnished camp houses, etc. and it has reasonable prices. Good Luck

As far as residency goes, you probably would qualify with a TX drivers licence and a utility bill showing that you actually live there.
I think the drivers licence would do it though. I've never seen anyone behind a counter even question someone about how long they'd lived in the state.
The Hunt goes on forever, the season never ends.
