Well, here we are going through the effects of Hurricane Ike, Able to use the computer and TV and run two small freezers. 09-17-08 Read about big fish caught on lake Conroe using jugs on TeasHuntFish.com. Hear tell that Lake Conroe is closed because of "Ike". We are in the middle of the Conroe Catfish Tournament sponsored by Fishing TX.com. which will end with prizes at the Annual Conroe Catfish Festival. They are showing pictures of big catfish that have been officially entered.
This brings to mind about several of us ol geezers sittin around talking about what the best catfish bait was and some of the items were chicken liver, gizzards, beef heart, liver, shad, perch live and cut-up and of course stink bait. My dad made up a concoction of sun-dried dead minnows from the bait tank, Limburger Cheese, rotted liver, punched into a mush with a few minnow tails still distinguishable. When we tried it we caught a bunch of eight inch channel cats. It sure was rank. Then the subject turned to chumming for catfish. Most everyone seemed to like to use soured corn. Everyone agreed to only use canned dog food in a net bag so the empty can could be retrieved instead of polluting the lake.
I remember a time long ago when I was about 6 years old. We were feeding soaked corn to our pigs so that they could digest more of the corn the first time around. We had two barrels and when one began to get down near a third left, Dad would start the second barrel fermenting. One day I watched as the pigs had eaten the last feeding in the barrel. The shoat pigs (about 40 lbs.) were squealing and jumping around on unsteady legs. The old Pole and China Sow ate her fill and sat down, pointed her head straight up and a little to the left and began to squeal continuously for about 20 minutes, then fell over on her side to sleep it off. Us Country folk take a lot of pleasure in watching things like that.
