What are the chances of an out-of-state hunter sticking a pig in the Sam Houstion Forest.  I'm from Wisconsin and am going to be passing thru that area.  I want to experience a hog hunt while I'm in Texas.  Or do you think I should try to hook up with a guide or outfitter?  I'm going to be entering Texas from the North of I35, going to Brownsville, and then heading out the Northeast corner on the way back.  I can hunt just about anywhere on the route.  Any suggestions or ideas will be very much appreciated.  Thanks!

It all depends on the amount of time you have to spend.  If you are heading to Brownsville you would have much more luck down there with a outfitters.

Pig hunting in Sam Houston is  tough..in the past 3 years ive seen 1 pig in legal shooting hours. They under the thickest cover and move mostly at night. Now especially after rifle season and as dry as it is now i would be really surprised if they arent completely nocturnal. There are a bunch of places however where you will have a guaranteed shot at a pig for 75 bucks a day.

Dont waste your time.  Even on my private ranch I have to wait till night and hunt under feeder lights.  In Sam Houston there are tons of pigs but they dont normally come out during daylight.  I have hunted the forest 3 years andhavent seen one.  Tonsof tracks, wallows and rooting but they are sneeky.  There are some great outfitters in east texas that would suit your needs better than SHNF.  With the cost os a public hunting permit you could go to an outfitter for not much more.

Hey Guys, Thanks for the info.  I don't have a lot of time to prepare for this trip or hunt, but am going to try to make the most of the opportunity.  If I'm going to have to spend a couple of dollars to get a good hunt, then that's just the way it is.  Can you help me out with a few names that I could get in contact with?  I'm just an average Joe, retired, and on a fixed income, but I could swing the $75 or so for a good time hunting.  If you can help me out, I sure would appreciate it.  Thanks.

The National Forest is bad because pigs are not color blind and you have to wear hunter orange.  Check out

Terry is a proffessional who loves hunting.  He retired from his regular job and started a game ranch in Centerville TX.  I have been there.  He will do what he has to to make you successsful.  His rates are very reasonable.
