i scouted a couple of places and saw rooting and tracks. i am just wondering how hard it will be to see a pig since you cant bait? is it best to stalk or just sit in a tree and wait?

Dont waste your time.  I have hunted the SHNF for a few years.  I hunted with sow in heat scents and seen nothing.  I have hunted over wallows and around areas torn up with rooting and seen nothing.  The thing is is that the pigs are nocturnal.  Also when they do move in the daytime pigs are not color blind like deer.  They see hunter orange which you are required to wear.  I hunt pigs on my ranch at night with great success cause I hunt at night with lights over the feeder.  Even on my ranch with low hunting pressure they are nocturnal.  If you are going to the forest just to hunt hogs then dont waste your gas or time.  Just my 2 cents.......

i plan on hunting in the forest later this spring.  on my dad's place we find and shoot them in the mornings all the time.  i have never hunted in east texas so i will be learning how they get around over there.  i have hunted at the gus engling wildlife area and shoot  pigs both times i was drawn to hunt over there.  i will be over around trinity most of the spring.  if i figure them out i will let you know.

I have never heard of a hog caller working.  The only hog I have ever heard if being called in is with a rabbit in distress call.  If you want more info on hog techniques check out my hog hunting honey hole www.texasboars.com  They will answer any questions you have.  The members have tons of experience.  Not trying to advertise another site but its packed full of info.
