There are really a few basic calls that you can master and use with good results.  I own a call company and call in the comp circuit and I can tell you that all that high ball loud stuff is useless.

Use the basics like the lonesome hen, the fedding chuckle and the gadwal quack.

lonesome hen.  Three mild quacks about two to three seconds apart.  Say hoot in the call three times.

Simple chuckle.  Say ticka ticka in the call, once you have that say tooka tooka and then ticka ticka, tooka tooka.

The gadwal quack is just a medium volume really low toned quack.  It is short in nature and is not drawn out like a mallard hen.

Learning to blow a duck call is useless, unless you learn to read the ducks.

One safe way to call ducks is to only call when you can see a wing tip and tail feathers.

If a duck is quartering away or going straight away from you, they have a harder time picking up bobbles in your calling skills.

Working the birds is what duck hunting is all about to me, and of course the greenheaded ones, are my favorite.

Take Bills advice about running the call, and then think about what I said about reading the birds, your straps will weigh more than in past years.
