You might want to think about a PTR-91.  Its made in the U.S., but its a semiautomatic Heckler & Koch G-3 copy (main W German army battle rifle for almost 40 years), made with H&K tooling, that can use all the spare parts, cleaning kits, accessories, etc made for the G-3.  It shoots .308 caliber, magazines are available and inexpensive, and can use a number of types of hollow point .308 hunting ammunition.  Some models also also available in .223 as well as the 7.62 x 39 which the SKS and AK both shoot.

One drawback is that due to the design of the delayed blowback mechanism, that makes shell ejection more reliable, you likely can not reload your cases.

They're more expensive that an AK-47 or SKS, but very reliable - the people I know that own one like them.  Website link is here

The SKS shoots a 7.62 x 39, which is a .308 caliber bullet, usually 120 gr instead of 147 gr (military .308-size).  The M4 a 5.56 x 45 (.223 remington).  If you're looking for a smaller caliber PTR makes a gun in .243, the PTR-91V, link here. DPMS makes an AR-15-type rifle in .223, link here.

Check out the 6.8 SPC in an AR-15 platform.  I just finished building one but haven't got to hunt with it yet.  Factory ammo will shoot a 110 gr bullet at about 2550 fps from a 16" barrel.  If you reload, you can get better performance.  Be careful with the barrel specs though.  You'll want to read up about it a little before you buy.  Check out http://68forums.com/forums/login.php?do=lostpw for more info.
