I'm thinking about getting a new deer rifle. Nothing wrong with the current rig, just itchin' for something different.
If you could only own one rifle for general hunting - deer, hog, varmints - in Texas what would you buy and why? I've purposefully left out the guns I currently own or what I'm thinking about buying so as to not influence any comments (or get insulted over my previous choices!). What is your ideal Texas set up?

For an all-purpose factory rifle I'd select a Remington Model 700 CDL SF in 7mm Remington Mag topped with a Zeiss Conquest 3 x 9 50mm. Not a cheap ride, but you asked.
In my opinion Remington makes the most accurate factory-made out-of-the-box rifle today for the buck. The Model 700 is a proven action and the CDL SF is an all-weather combination coming in at a little over 7 1/2" lbs so it doesn't weigh a ton.
The 7mm outperforms any deer cartridge on the planet in terms of a combination of ease of ammunition availability and weight variety (139 gr - 175 gr, wider variety and easier to get than SAUM or WSSMs), ballistics (yes Virginia, in equal weights it significantly outperforms a .270 in terms of drop and energy, especially at longer ranges), and ease of use (doesn't kick any harder than a .270 IMHO). Shoot a 140 grain bullet and you're crusing along over 3,100 fps out the muzzle with over 1,500 ft-lbs at 500 yards (depending on the bullet design). Some might argue that the 7mm is too much for Texas-sized deer. I'd counter that with a well-made bullet you shouldn't tear anything more up that with other cartridges, and as the range gets longer you'll appreciate the lack of drop.
The Zeiss Conquest (again in my opinion) is a tough, dependable scope. I love Leupolds (that's all I own), but after shooting through both I have to admit that the Zeiss is a cut above, and the Conquest is the cheapest way to get at German glass.

I'd have to go with a lever action myself. They just fit my style of hunting; I like to do alot of walking/stalking. If I had to settle for only 1 gun for the game you mention, & budget wasn't a problem. I would go with a Browning BLR Lightweight. I'm not familiar enough to know thier caliber options, but something around 7mm. The detachable magazine provides options of different bullet style/weight for reloading. Lever actions give quick follow up shots, if needed, and are very portable. Top it with a good variable power scope and I think you've got a good all purpose gun.
Just my opinion & I know it'll be different than most.

Yep, I was thinking of a Remington 700 in 308. Hadn't really thought about the 7mm so David's comments are food for thought. I'm also interested in a 25.06 - lighter bullet of course but good ballistics, accurate, and less kick. I'm currently shooting a Tikka 270 WSM and like it but WSM ammo is limited.

I've got a 2506 that just sits in the safe. Have been thinking about selling it. Is a rem 700 bdl with 26" blued bbl, and has a hogue pillar bedded rubber stock on it and barrel is free floated. Trigger is about 3#. gun shoots about an inch with Winchester BST's. Would come with redfield rings and bases. let me kow if you are interested.

I owned a Sako .25-06 for over 20 years as my primary rifle. Shot a boatload of deer with it too...great gun and good round, no doubt. But, I'd take either a .308 and 7mm Rem Mag over a .25-06 hands down.
Two knocks on the '25: First, in my experience you have to be concerned with bullet design more than with the other two rounds (I had a 100 gr Spitzer point split in two on a buck's shoulder...long story) which limit your ammunition availablility to some degree and second is longer range knock down power. I've taken deer out to 250 yards with no problem. But, it was with a well-constructed bullet that my rifle liked - which isn't going to happen all the time.
I do a lot of hunting with a .308 and its a very good caliber too. But, beyond 200 yards ballistics/bullet drop starts being a bigger concern. Right now I limit my shots to under 300 yards with my .308 because that's as far as I can currently practice. Make no doubt snipers use them out to hundreds of yards plus...but for me, since I don't reload, it just takes awhile to find the loads that shoot best at distance.
Whatever you do though I wouldn't buy anything without a stainless barrel and synthetic stock. You do have to be concerned about wooden stock 'swelling' (that happened to my Sako) and blued barrels will rust without proper and sometimes immediate care. That's not to say that 'all weather' rifles are foolproof and carefree, its just that in my experience they need less care.

Mike- whatever you do don't buy a Remington 700 BDL in 30.06. That one rifle will pretty much run the table on game animals here in Texas. It leaves almost no legitimate reason to buy another rifle. Imagine how empty your sporting life would be if you couldn't dream about a new rifle. I made that mistake myself and found it took years of careful analysis, gun shows, and gun stores to overcome the affliction. I'm on the road to recovery now and think there may be a lightweight stainless steel 700 in my future.

While I'm not lucky to have a place to hunt in Texas this year, I am lucky enough to have what I want as far as rifles go. 1966 Remington Model 700 BDL 7mm Magnum w/ a 3-9x40 Leupold vx1 for $230 and it does the job. I will have a higher quality Leupold in years to come. As far as the rifle, I’d prefer a removable magazine, but the hinged floor plate works just fine. My absolute favorite would have to be the lever-action 1969 Model 94 30-30 with iron sights. I put a ghost ring on it when the rear sight kept sliding off. That made it a little better for me. If they both killed deer in the 60's then they'll kill deer now. My suggestion would be a Winchester or maybe a Marlin lever-action and/or any Remington Model 700s. I always would go w/ what works so my next purchase will be an older used rifle. That’s why I posted the years. They’re basic and reliable when properly maintained. Keep in mind that Hornady came out w/ new ammunition called LeverEvolution (something like that) for lever-actions. The bullets are made differently for more accurate/ longer distance shooting. You could put on a side-mounted scope to use w/ the the iron sights for more versatility if you wanted. I’ve never done this, but I’m just offering suggestions. I actually bought a side-mount, but that’s as far as I got. I didn’t fix what wasn’t broken. Gook luck.

I'm going to go a little out there and say a Rem. Model 7 chambered in .260. Light, easy to carry, flat-shooting, and I believe that a .264 diameter bullet is the perfect middle-of-the-road between small bore guns like a .243 and a .308 diameter round. Ammo selection will kill you though. To me the big variable here is varmints. Personally, I would like to mount a bob one of these days, and if i keep taking my .300wsm to the stand, I'll never have a pelt worthy.

My choice would be the 6.5 Grendel. I would choose this because it is a AR-15 platform. It also has the capability to shoot flatter and further than the .308. It can also be used to shoot small game to large game.

I'd say get you a weatherby vanguard 25-06... my brother has this rifle and can kill very comfortably out to 500 yards we shoot it further just have to be a little more careful... even my dad who is not the best shot shoots it out to 250 it shoots damn flat at that range i have a 243 vanguard and shoot comfortable 1 inch groups at 350 yards... in my opinion these are two of the best rifles i've ever shot and i've shot some 1000 dollar 308 and 7mm that are not near as accurate but it's all about how you shoot we rely on shot placement not knock down power to kill so if your lookin for knock down power i'd go with a weatherby 30-06 vanguard.

The only big game rifle I own is a remington 700 bdl 3006.I handload all my ammo from 110gr. varmint to 180gr. rn for hogs and close range deer hunting. If I thought I could hit well at 300 yards or more, and had that place to hunt,I might chose a 7mm. rem magnum. In my opinion if it ain't broke don't fix it.the 30-06 is a good choice for the one rifle hunter.Consider the cost of ammo, and the avalibility. If you're going to use a scope thats good,,but buy a rifle with iron sights as well. Sight them in. You never know what might happen on the way hunting.Just this season I got cought in a rain with same pigs on a little island. No problem, just took my scope off and got two fifty pounders.I use weaver type mounts for this reason. When I put the scope back on it's within an inch of my zero at 100 yards. Sometimes dead on.

I have hunted with a Rem model 788 .243 cal for years and have never missed a shot, I love it becuase it is short and perfect for hunting out of a blind. My dad uses the Rem model 788 in the 7mm 08 cal and has dropped deer at 250 yards and killed 350lb wild boar with ease!!! We have a Marlin 30-30 lever action that is colecting dust in the gun cabinet nicely and just upgraded to a Winchester model 70 .243 wssm synthetic. Just recently my son recieved a single shot trifecta (20 gauge, .22 cal, & .243 cal) that he absolutely loves. If I had plenty of money I would probably buy a Ruger ranch riffle or a nice Browning A bolt!!!

Don't buy a "Light Weight" Remington. Get yourself a nice Browning A-bolt with the Boss, I am fortunate enough to have been able to shoot both. The remington has more recoil with a lesser calibar. Besides a Browning is a BROWNING!! top of the line in it's price group. And I do own one.

I already have mine. Winchester Model 88 in .308 got it brand new many years ago and haven't even fired a fullb box of ammo out of it. It's deadly accurate and wouldn't trade it for anything else.

I just bought a Winchester model 70 in 7mm Rem. Mag. used, came with a 3-9x 40. I haven't gotten to the range yet to try it out. Looking forward to finding a place to hunt so I can use it.
