I am always looking for new creative ways to improve my hunting and fishing success. Recently, I read a story about hunters that use regular store bought flour to attract hogs to the feeders and traps. It makes sense because flour is a type of grain that I could see pigs enjoying. But, what I also found out is that pigs like to roll around in the flour to help knock off the ticks and fleas. So when I found out my dad was heading to "La Mota" ranch on the last weekend of deer season I called him and told him about using the flour. He has alot of trust in me and told me he would stop at the store and check it out. So that evening he spread some flour mixed with corn in the hog pipe, underneath his feeder and in the hog traps. He even spilt some flour in the middle of the sendero on accident on the way to the blind. Well, the next morning when he was walking to the blind for the am hunt, he noticed all the flour was gone and the area had been rooted up by pigs, he could still hear pigs making alot of noise close by. After the morning hunt he walked around to examine the hog activity and found two nice size pigs in the hog trap covered in flour where they had hit the bait!!! All year long we had not caught any pigs in those traps until we changed the bait attractant to the flour / corn mix, I guess it paid off to do a little research and try some new ideas!!! Now we got some pork chops in the deep freezer ready for the bar-b-que pit!!!

It was the same bad luck at all our hunting locations this year, La Mota ranch in Benavides, the De La Garza ranch south of Benavides and Rancho Sueno Mio in Mathis TX, just no bucks moving around, plenty of does and spikes, but what really shocks me is that we saw only two yearlings and no fawns!!! Not Good, but plenty of hogs moving around and lots of Dove!!! We are going to step up our wildlife management and plant some food plots, dig a nice pond, and just do a better job of attracting wildlife for next year!!!
