We just got a lease about 12 miles west of Utopia. It's in a deep canyon with a spring fed creek running through it. We've been down there a couple of times and we've seen Axis, Fallow, and Blackbuck. There are also signs of hog and Aoudad. A guy from an ajoining lease said there are a few elk there, also. We haven't seen any whitetail, yet, but who knows. With the exotics there, it's no big deal. I'm just wondering if anyone has hunted that area, and knows more about the whitetails in the area. Do they compete with the other exotics for forage?

There is no doubt that whitetails will be in direct competition.  How big is your lease?

Sounds like it will be great if you are not concerned about having whitetails around.  There is a lot of concern among ranchers that axis and other exotics, when left to their own, will out compete whitetails for food and territory.

It's about 1100 acres, most of which is vertical. But, there are meadows large enough for a stand and feeder and all are within 40 - 75 yards of a stream. We were there this weekend and saw a few audads, plus some axis. There is evidence of a lot of hog activity, and we heard the coyotes howling one night.

Bexar county

I would take an Axis deer before a whitetail any day of the week, in my oponion the meat is better and Axis are larger and reproduce better.  There is some good hog hunting in that area with alot of European bloodline hogs running through the area, hope you get some and dont forget to post up pics!!!

No doubt Axis is better meat.  And, while it is very good, I'd rather have the 'home boys' (whitetail) around.

We've hunted on a ranch for over 10 years now that has had Axis on it.  Initially there were just a few but now the place is about overrun with them.  And, while Ken is right in that Axis will compete for food, I've seen them actually drive whitetails away.

Thankfully the landowner has done something about the numbers (yum for us!), but if this is any indication Axis will take over a place if their numbers aren't kept under strict control.  Hopefully that's not the case with yours.
