Hi All,
Just got my biggest pig to date! Actually got two today, but the first one was pretty small. This bar hog went 394 pounds! Took him this morning at about 10:30 near Pawnee, OK. Hope the picture posts OK - I'm not sure if it's working...
Regards,
Jim

He was facing away from me about 3/4 of the way around. I hit him up high just behind the right shoulder, so the bullet ended up near the base of the skull. He took about two steps.

good performance and shot placement for a 30-30.
A cuz and law shot one not much smaller than yours in the shoulder with a 30 30. just knocked a 5" plug of gristle off, a little present for his encounter. hog just kind of wandered off......... awesome animals!

Hi All,
Thanks for the comments!
When I took the shot, he was at a very steep angle away from me, so my intent was to try to get in behind the shoulder blade & gristle, and if the bullet penetrated well enough, hit the base of the brain - or at least destroy the spine just behind the skull. I'm new at this, but it looked like I pretty well did what I intended! There was a LOT of damage to the lungs & internals, but almost no meat destroyed. Iwas using a Hornaday 160 gr. LeveRevolution, and I am REALLY sold on that ammo!
He dropped immediately when hit, got up for a few seconds and staggered around, then dropped again DRT. I was glad he didn't get up & head towards me, 'cause the shot was very close - about 20 yards or less. I had been stalking a big sow for quite a while, and was stunned when I came up on the bar from behind. I was within 20 yards when I first saw him - He never saw me!
He was my 4th hog, and weighed better than twice as much as my first three combined!
Regards,
Jim

Here's an update!
I was a little concerned that a boar that big might not be all that good to eat, but no problem so far! We had sausage Saturday morning that was great, and we crock-potted some ribs Sunday. They were really outstanding with a little mesquite-smoke BBQ sauce, although they took longer to get tender in the crock pot than store-bought pork.
Dunno how much difference it makes that my big hog was a bar (vs. an uncut boar), but we've sure had some good eat'n so far!
One interesting note: The sausage & ribs both smelled really gamey when cooking, but had no trace of gamey taste when they were done! So - If you're new at this like I am, and you're cooking up your hog, don't be put off by the smell - it might still be really good!
Regards,
Jim

GOOD HUNT I LOVE THOSE CLOSE ENCOUNTERS...
SOTXBOWHUNTER,
I had a number of close encounters that weekend! The evening (Saturday) before my hunt, I went for a walk to get the 'lay of the land', and I snuck up to within 20 or 30 yards of two different sounders - two sows and a bunch of piglets in each. I've been wanting to try hunting hogs with a handgun, and after my experience Saturday, my next hunt may be with my ol' .44 Dan Wesson. I was within EASY handgun range for any of those sows!
Right now, I have a cheapo red-dot scope on the DW, and was waiting until I got a decent real scope before I tried hunting with it, but now I may not wait - I could've had any of those sows with open sights on the .44!
I'll be sure & post results if/when I go with the pistol.
Regards,
Jim

Just got the 394-pounder back from the taxidermist. It's the first (and probably only) trophy I'll ever have mounted, but it's a kick to have!
Regards,
Jim
