Hello Everyone...

I need yall's help. I have recently inherited 2 hog traps from my dad. I finally found a place to put them out at, but see I'm stuborn and don't want some "guy" setting it for me. I have ask my whole group of friends on how to properly do it and all of them just say "I'll get it done for you" (they think they need to take care of me since my dad passed away)...but NO...I want to do it myself. So can someone please tell me what I need to do so I can continue to prove to the "boys" I don't need them to take care of me.

So...how do I pick a good location, use bait or sour corn, and any other help or suggestion would be great!!!

Thank yall...

Been trapping these things for years and it can get tricky if you dont take care of the little things. Sent control is my number one foe. I think they can smell as good as a deer and smart as hell. I would suggest you bait the trap for a while without setting it. Dont set them on the main trail either I have had no luck with that find the secondary trail and set up there. The best luck I have had as far as bait goes and this is going to sound funny. Plain corn and grape coolaid. For some reason they like the stuff! Sent control Sent control Sent control! Blend in your traps with natural cover limbs sticks brush grass not to much though. Let some light get in. Good luck

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!

It started to come back a bit when you said the Kool-Aid thing. That's what it was that my dad used. Couldn't remember. When you say scent control, any suggestions? Also, I have been seeing a bunch of wallows around a VERY small low area. Do I put them close (right on) or do I put them off a ways? Its all open area where they are. There is also land damage in a patch of trees with an opening in the middle...What do you think??

Also, I really can not tell you THANK YOU enough for your help!

No problem! Myself I wouldnt get to close to the wallows. Thats their home. Look at it like this. It would be like someone trying to trap you in your home. I would stay on the trail. look for rubbs on trees usually pines. there will be dirt on the rubs and some cut marks. I prefer to set traps where brush meets an opening the opening is where they are most likely feeding or look for where the root and push up leaves. Look for where they are feeding. For sent control take the time to go to a drug store and get you some latex gloves and use them! Rubber boots and some type of sent killer. Fresh earth sent preferably. Try to stay out of there home it will make them change their pattern and that is when things get tough! Good luck! and if you need anything else let me know.

I have seen alot of people just put feeders over the hog trap, we use corn and put a nice pile of "flour" on top of the corn, hogs love it and will roll around in it.  I have also heard of people putting a piece of carpet tied on to the back of the hog trap soaked in disel or used motor oil, fish grease.  There alot of different options when it comes to trapping hogs, I recomend to put a trail camera near the trap, your gonna get alot of hogs coming around to check it out and you want to get pics of what is potentially out there.

Yall are AWESOME!!!!!! Thanks a million...I THINK I'M GONNA GET IT!!!!

Oh another question...The property is about 100 or so acres. We also hunt with the dogs out there. Does this make any difference on the trapping?

I feel kinda silly having to ask all of this, but I never needed to know. I had been hunting for years with my dad (deer, hogs, trapping, coyotes, birds...everything), and loved it, but didn't need to know how to do it on my own. But he left it all to me (guns, calls, decoys, the whole nine yards) so that I could carry it on with me...I'm just a little lost on where to go from here....

try diesel on your corn to make the deer not enter and helps lessin racoons if you have that problem. If you do have the coon problem (God I do!!!!) try chicken wire around the trap to keep them from escaping once they have triped ur trap. Hogs love diesel or used motor oil.

I think dogs can push wildlife away, especially hogs, they dislike each other.  Give the property some rest and the wildlife will come back, another good thing to do to enhance the wildlife on your property is to make sure you are making it attractive wo the wildlife, mow, disk, plow, this will help keep the animals hanging around.  if you have access to a tractor take the time to mow strips, disk fenclines and brushlines and plant corn, sunflower, grain, peas or whatever you seed you can get your hands to provide plenty of food source for wildlife, providing a water source would be good to, so make sure you have clean stock tanks or water on the property!!!  Good luck, make sure to take someone hunting to share the memories and the glorious experience of enjoying the outdoors!!!

Good point, but we have no problem with the wildlife being there. The problem is too much of it. The property owners wife isn't to thrilled about "game managment". She is concrete raised and doesn't understand.

P.S. - Always have my hunting buddy (My Daddy R.I.P.) with me...even when it appears I am out alone...

All of you guys are great and I appriciate all the support...

Going coyote hunting tonight...wish me luck!!!!

hi Amanda,

heres the hog maulers recipe for scent control

1/4 cup baking soda

1 qt hydrogen peroxide and

2 tablespoons unscented soap  like sportswash etc.

combine all in a 3 gal bucket or  larger

be ready for a soapy eruption but

the bubbles should bust rather quickly

pour liquid intop a new clean sprayer and spray on scrub and rinse with non clorinated  water,  anything you touch

you have created an oxidiseing soap that will strip skunk spray off in one application!

use within 48 hours  or the oxygen leaves and you have regular soap again

many have had good luck with soured corn

2 cups sugar

1 50 lb bag of corn

1 package of quick rise yeast (store extra in ice box)

sun warmed water to cover the top of corn

watch for the first 4 days and add water to cover till corn swells and stops drawing water

add rasberry cool-aid or gelatin or rasberry extract for that extra special attractant.

pour off 1/2 of the water after 8 days and add more to cover.

use the water only filtered through cloth to spray traps and high in the trees.

the scent will be spread over a wide area and only the trap should have the smell on the ground.

refresh often for maximum effectiveness.

dig a hole with phd's   (post hole diggers) down to aproximately 2' add soured corn till 3/4 full and cover with dirt.

place trap over this hole with trip wire centered over hole and 2" off ground.

as hogs root out hole they trip the trap wire and are caught.

.

.

We do good around here and Brazoria County.

We have to many new developments coming throug though pushing them all out, and the land owners around here have been screwed over so bad that unless your family you aren't getting on the land.

the only reason I even have a place is because my dad was a well respected hunter, so they are giving me a chance.

Traps go out Friday evening...I'm super excited...

And once again...I can not tell all of you enough...THANK YOU FOR ALL THE HELP...

Good deal! I was up in East TX this weekend and I got two boars one about 200lbs and one close to 175lbs no pics to dark. Gonna have to cut them up into sausage though the both where rutting hard after the same sow! You could smell them from 200yrds away.

What kind of training will you do with or for the hog?

You might get one like this but I have read you would want a sow.

Porky is a wild boar captured at 1 month that is now about 1 year old and 275lbs.  I would worry about it just getting excited and rolling on top of me if it knocked me down (even if it was playful and friendly).  See videos.
