Looks like a real nice place. I love that area. Born and raised all around there. My grandfather was born and raised in Beeville, TX. He was an outdoor writer (Fred Strong). In my opinion I would try and increase the age of your harvested bucks. Some of them appear to be young.
Very nice place.

We follow the Texas Parks ad Wildlife rule for the Texas Big Game Awards, they reward a ranch for harvesting and recording mature bucks over 4 years old and 140 inches, we are low fenced and have been feeding protein for 6 years now. We have several Texas Big Game Awards on this low fenced ranch, we dont allow young deer to be harvested, what your definition of young deer is not the same as Texas Parks and Wildlife apparently. We are not running guided hunts for 10 year old deer, and offer chance for a mature deer over 4 years old that must net 140 inches according to the Big Game Awards, this ranch in 89 produced the Galloway Buck, on the front cover of Texas Trophy Magazine, it was and still is the only B and C entry frim Bee County, several B & C entries have been produced from Refugio and San Patrico County in a 5 mile circle of this ranch. The 160 TBGA harvested was one of three mature deer allowed a year and all were 4 years old or older. Those are not young deer in my view. We strive for a mature trophy 140 and over, there is a penalty for shooting anything under 140 on our lease, even cull or management buck have to be over 4 years old. If we were shooting young deer our neighbors would have high fenced up off a long time ago. Who was Fed Strong and who did he write for??

Everyone has their guidelines and management practices. Maturity and trophies are defined by what the land will produce. We target 6.5 YO as our bench mark as we are trying to reach full potential with horn growth. A whitetail becomes skeletally mature at 4 so by all means they have reached maturity. Good luck with everything, it looks like a nice place.
Fred Strong wrote for himself. He had his own publication called the Outdoor Sportsman that went out around the 1st and 15th of every month... Some of the last ones I have are from the 70's. He passed at 54 so I didn't have the opportunity to really get to know him well. I was also instrumental in helping Garza launch the Muy Grande Deer Contest. You can read the history here.

I googled and found the same thing, seems like i remeber that magazine that was in thr 70's I am thinking, he was a pretty good writer as i remember, Garza for sure needed help, I still remember trying to collect from him for a add somebody ran off with the money for. Some people blame him for the deer fencing of south texas due to peeps going nuts to win muey Grande prizes, was a crazy time when that contest was the only one and causing such a stir. I kinda miss going down us 59 and stoping in the old gas station and looking at the photos on the wall and asking to see the cooler bucks that were in there, those days are long gone for sure. I also wish your grand was still writing and i remeber him after i thought about it some, do you know where he lived in Beeville, we founded and used to own the Bee Pic and then sold it, we have 2 family 1800 acre ranches still in the county. I am 55 now...lol Beeville has never had a deer contest alas....

I am not sure where he lived exactly. A little after my father was born (Not sure the exact time frame) they moved to Victoria. When I was a teenager growing up we had a lease in Berclair. Good memories there. Now I have been in Mexico going on 9 years.

I used to work for a Dodge Dealership right on US 59 in Beeville, we used to rush over to the donut shop to get that magazine, i remember seeing guys in the body shop using it to tape off paint area;s, of course they were using it so they read it and look at the deer pictures at the same timelol

LOL.... that's funny right there... Here a pic of him from back in the day when there weren't all these fancy stands we have today and all the feeders and such...
Back when it was a true accomplishment to pull two bucks like this in a life time much less on the same day..

Gees, you ought to find out what ranch he hunted and hwo with and where he hung out in Beeville when he lived here, the American Cafe was a big hunters hang out before it closed, Beeville was known as bird dog captial of Texas on Puriena dog food sacks one year even. We had 2 of the best gunsmiths in texas bill dugat and Bill Davis Sporting goods, peeps from all over stopped in on the way to the south texas deer leases. Oconner, Welder and Wood ranches are in my family still.

I know the O'Conner and Welder Ranches well. Growing up in and around Victoria, those names always come up when deer hunting is involved. I remember my dad telling me that he mostly hunted in Webb county I believe.
