For Texans who are fed up with fishing poles, the Legislature has heeded their catfish catches woes. Starting Thursday fisherman will be allowed to "noodle" or wade into the muddy waters of Texas lakes and rivers and pull out catfish with their bare hands.

"No one knows why it was illegal," the bill's author Rep. Gary Elkins, R-Houston, told Texas Monthly.

Before the law legalizing "noodling" was passed, hand fishing, or "grabbing," was a class C misdemeanor that came with a $500 fine.

ALTHOUGH IT HAS BEEN AT LEAST 30YRS AGO, I HAVE DONE THIS. BEST FISH I HAVE CAUGHT WAS ABOUT 30#. THE ABOVE PICT SHOWS A "YELLOW" THAT WOULD WEIGH 70-100#. DON'T THINK THAT IS A REAL PICT. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO NEVER HAVE TRIED THIS, IT IS NOT AS EASY AS YOU MAY THINK, A LARGE FISH WITH ROOM TO MOVE AROUND IS A HARD (AND MOSTLY BLOODY BATTLE---FOR YOU). THEY CAN BE VERY PROTECTIVE OF THEIR HOME. THOSE OF YOU WHO CATCH LARGE EVEN AVERAGE FISH 5-10# HAVE FELT THEIR TEETH WHEN TAKING THEM OFF OF YOUR HOOK. THINK WHAT THEY CAN DO ONE TO ONE. IF YOU DESIDE TO TRY NOODLING, BE READY TO LOOSE SOME SKIN AND A LITTLE BLOOD. AND IT WILL HURT FOR A FEW DAYS, BUT IT IS A LOT OF FUN AND WILL PUT SOME GREAT EATIN FISH IN THE OL' FRIER. THEY WILL EVEN TASTE BETTER TO YOU BECAUSE YOU HAD TO BLEED TO FEED----PUN ON WORDS PEOPLE, BUT USUALLY TRUE.
