Going out today with some friends to the dove lease -- I have heard birds are moving in from up North and that the hunting has been pretty decent out West of the metroplex (as to mourning dove but whitewings not so much).  Guess I'll know by this evening, since I am leaving work early and one of the guys has a mojo to add to my decoy setup.  :-)

Well, we hit a field near Newcastle with very little action Friday.  A few birds were flying but not many opportunities -- in our group of four, we only took one bird.  This morning we moved to a field near Graham and saw lots more birds but not enough hunters around to get them moving.  We bagged a few more before heading back home.  Here is the decoy setup we used -- can't see the mojo too well (it is on the left side of the pic between the two t-post stationary setups).  When birds came by they'd pull in to get a closer look, so I am convinced that this kind of setup will bring in birds when there are enough guns on the field to keep 'em flying.

Amen to that.  Now I am hoping for more rain to help out with any late quail hatch . . .

From what I have been hearing, this vary greatly in terms of quail populations around the state.  Some areas have been devastated, others did fair.  My lease, between San Angelo and Abiline, apparently saw little by way of a hatch but had enough birds to carry over and should make this year an okay one.  At least that is the report I got.  Another drought in 2007, though, and it would be devastating as well.  I'd like to hear from those around the state on this.
