HELP

With the hog hunt coming up, can anyone comment on the best blades to use for hogs?  Also, how much of a factor is distance when compared to hunting white tails?

Thanks-

Chris

I think any good, non-mechanical, name brand in the 100gr to 125gr will work for hogs. I heard that it is best to try and hit the hog at a quartering away angle to avoid the protective plate along the front part of the body. Although I had a friend that shot a 200lb hog right through the shoulders, had no trouble with the grissle plate. The poundage of the bow may have something to do with the penetration factor. Good luck on the hunt.

MUZZY blades are the best for all game :)   Just my opinion.

muzzys are really good. i shot a 120 pound hog at 30yds. the arrow passed through and stuck into a mesquite tree bout 10 yds behind the hog.

My first bowkill was hog taken through the shoulders with a Rocky mountain Snyper mech. I shoot 70 at a 30 inch draw. Good luck

I would have too agree about the Muzzys. They are very durable although not the shapest. The thing that makes Muzzys so good is their ability too shoot like a field point. They fly great and are very durable. I've been thinking about a cut on impact point but the muzzys have proven themselves time after time.

A conclusion is most often simply the place where you get tired of thinking.

Chris,

Take a look at the 2nd thread posted about broadheads on this site. It may help you.

I like satellite 125 three blades and haven't had a failure.  I shot a buck once too low with a muzzy 145, broke it front leg. The deer ran to 40 yds. stopped and took another one through grass and broke it's left hind leg. He traveled  50 yards and gave up the chase.

I shot a 175 pig last fall with my bow which is shooting the Easton A/C/C's at 268fps. The Steelforce 100gr went straight through the right ribcage and exited through the left shoulder and stuck in the ground several inches...I was sold forever

I own Dos Plumas Ranch and have alot of hog hunters come through. The best performing broadhead, no matter what the brand, is the old traditional 2 blade. It worked for the indians for hundreds of years.

I would suggest two blade broadheads or the rocky mountain sniper.  With on ly two blades these will provide deeper penatration verse 3 or 4 bladed broadheads.  I like the Magnus ones.

As a hoghunter, I like the fixed blade broadheads, and prefer 4 blade Muzzys. The two blades are preferable for very large game like water buffalo for sure, but the 4 blade Muzzys are fine for big hogs. More cutting area. Try and shoot the hogs within 25 yards. Piglets at any yardage your comfortable with. The difference in shooting a whitetail and a hog is an arrow will cut through a deer like butter compared to the dense build of the hog. Deer are easy to kill compared to the other animals of the world. If you really want to give yourself the very best chance of recovering your hog, make sure you shoot it quartering away and not broadside. Aim for the opposite shoulder. Midway on the body or a little lower, preferably for your up and down mark. Be aware that sometimes they may try and duck the arrow. If they don't, you have a perfect heart shot and won't have to track more than @ 50 yards. Never, ever try the front or quartering towards on a fair size hog, because more than likely, you'll be disapointed when you go to recover it. Hogs are tuff animals and can take alot of abuse. Just have patience and pick your shot well. Good Luck on your first hog hunt and I hope your successful. Send pictures!

i have shot hogs with mechs. muzzies, the 9.99 serated broadheads at walmart but im a thunderhead guy. i shot a pse firestorm with gold tip arrows and 85 grain thunderheads. i have never had penetration issues with this set up i also shoot 73lbs. i shoot thunderheads because i can switch from field points to these heads and not have any movement, they shoot the same for me at least. on hogs i usually dont get a pass through but i get enough to penetrate both side out to 25 yrds. for me muzzies dont cut it, in the 8 plus deer i have shot with thunderheads ive only had 1 that didnt pass through(was a spine shot) with muzzies ive shot 4 deer and never had a pass through. like some one said its an opinion like it or not its mine

Best blade I ever used for pigs was a Muzzy Phantom, out of my trad bows, and a regular Muzzy 100 gn 3-blade out of my compound.  I've shot several different blades but keep coming back to the Muzzy's.
