And with a bow no less. Talk about making things hard on yourself.
So here goes,
Saturday afternoon 5:15 and I'm back in the stand about 20 yards from a feeder that has a huge crator rooted out below it. Nothing but rabbits, birds and a ton of knats and skeeters so at 7:15 I get down to check a road that were we poured corn. The road was about 30 yards from my stand and I had good cover heading to the road. Well I made it to the road but could not see anything out in the corn. I decided to wait out the rest of the day light watching the road. Then I hear a loud squeel behind me and turn around to see 2 very large hogs having a little tussel about 60 yards away. The larger of the 2 hogs turns and starts to run towards the corn that is near where my stand was setup. I start hearing what sounds like cattle running thru the brush and about 25 to 30 hogs come out of the brush heading towards the large boar and the corn. About this time I notice that I am standing directly in the middle of the corn line we had poured, not a good feeling, and the hogs are working my way. With my heart almost jumping out of my chest, the hogs get to about 20 yards I drew my bow, almost in defense, but I could not see my site pins because in all of the excitement I had not turned on the pin illuminator that Allen had given to me the night before. I had only one choice, take a step into the road and try to get enough of the last sunlight that was left to light my fiberoptic pins. Well the hogs saw me move and scattered across the field. I took the time to let down my draw and turn on the pin light. Now, I'm just hoping that I did not spook them too much to return to the corn. I got what I wanted and here they came, right at me, I can still see that line of large hogs(150 - 250lbs) coming my way. I started looking for a tree near by just in case but all the trees were Mesquite bushes and too small to get up into. By now the smaller hogs are at 15 yards again and the larger hogs are hanging about 25 to 30 yards out so I draw my bow again and hope these small hogs near me will split up and give me a good broadside shot. Just then this small hog splits off of the group and comes my way. I center the pin just behing the shoulder and touch off my release. WHACK!SQUEEEEEEL! and they all run. WOW, what a rush, even though I knew I had shot one of the smaller hogs I was excited as this was my first hog and I got it with a bow from the ground. I can't wait to go again. I would also like to try and find a GUN hog hunt we could get a group on, that would be a blast.
