Fishing conditions are improving from what they were last month. The bait fish are still moving in the bay when the tides and wind are right.  The north and east winds will blow out the tides when the fonts come through and the bait fish with it.  Water temperature in the surf has been ranging from 65 to 68 degrees this week with the bay areas hitting 72 in the flats on a sunny day.  Water condition are mixed and still seeing runoff from the Trinity River so the salinity is low.

This past week the best bet for action has been the jetties.  The North jetty around the boat cut has been holding the large black drum around the boat cut.  Drums are hitting the best on broken crab but they also hit live and dead shrimp.  If you are looking to catch bull reds fish the south jetty near the end by where the old light house used to be in about 20 foot of water near the drop off to the channel.  If you can pick up some shad or croakers use them for the best action.  Also found whiting and sheep head at the jetties.

Reds are showing in the flats of East bay but running a little shy of the 22 inch minimum. The intercoastal is harboring a few specs but difficult to find.  Water is warming up and the spoil banks along the ship channel should turn on soon.  Expecting the first trout spawn to occur about the second week of April when the water is in the right condition and slam some sow trout for the freezer.

Bait availability – Bait camps have live and dead shrimp available. Hornbecks had a few croakers this past week but they went like hot cakes.  You can catch some bait fish in the flats with a cast net if hit the spots at the right time.
