I had a buddy here at work call me the other day and make a proposal to me for this hunting season. Seems that my friend of his needs some cedar cleared off of their ranch near Burnet, Texas and the Government will pay her $25 per acre. We went out yesterday to take a look around and start the clearing. I was very excited when I saw the ranch, it is 800 acres and we will be the only people other than one of the landowners that will be hunting. There was plenty of deer and hog sign so we put up a couple of feeders and stands. We also found a ton of grapes growing in a bottom and the hogs were tearing it up. The clearing of cedar is not going to be fun but with the DR Trimer/Mower, bladed weedeater and chainsaws we were able to knock out 10 acres yesterday afternoon in only 2 1/2 hours. Its great because this place is just 30 min. from my house, hope to get in some after work hunts. I will get some pics of the place so you guys can check it out.

Thanks greencows00, I feel very lucky to get the chance to hunt this place. The owner has a game cam that he is going to setup to show us some of the bucks that are running on the ranch. When I get the pics I will post them also. Where do you hunt George?

Gman, sounds like you got the good end of that deal. funny thing is, you're clearing out cedars and we're trying to get some planted on our place. i hunt some family land that has been in CRP for about 15 years. its got a few mesquite's on it, but for the most part it is open range.
sure would be nice to have the lease only 30 minutes away. mine is almost 4 hours away. enjoy your new place. ya'll gonna do some dove huntin' out there too?

greencows00,
What public lands do you hunt? I primarily hunt the Davy Crockett National Forest and our ranch near Bryan. Even though I got lucky on the new hunting place I probably will only hunt it a couple of times because I really like to hunt with my current group of buddies. I was able to get them on for the bow season but come rifle it will be out to the forest for us.
Slim,
Where is you place located. You may want to check into some of the land management information that can be found on the internet, it can be very helpful. I would go with the mesquite or some other type of tree other than cedar. The cedars drink up so much water it is bad for the soil and other plants that you may want to keep around. Just do a search on either wildlife management or land management for wildlife or something to that effect and you will find tons of good info.

We went to the lease today to do some clearing for the landowner and setup a feeder. We were driving back on the property and saw two really nice bucks. Both were 8pt but one had 10" G2s and a really nice spread. We been busting butt on the clearing and now have 90% done so soon it will be all hunting time on the land.
We will be heading to the DCNF in 2 weeks for our first scouting trip of the year. We are planning on hunting the Big Slough area which is a large swamp that runs along the Neches River. Will be a completely new area for me as I have not seen it yet so I kind of excited as to what we will find.
James, If I could let others on the land I would be willing to do so but this deal was something I did not setup. Maybe some of us can get together and do a public lands hunt or we can do a duck hunt on our family ranch if the ducks come to Texas this year.

Gman,
Congrats on getting hooked up in Burnet. I use to hunt there in the late 80's, the hunting was fantastic and the area I had permission to hunt was only 20 acres, killed quite a few deer there, one decent buck, mainly did herd control and harvested does for the owner which didn't bother me one bit since I enjoy eating what I kill.
Hope you have a very successful hunting season this year, maybe we can get hooked up at Aquilla sometime during the season.

man that'll be worth it Gman.
It's also good to know the government is trying to encourage ranchers to get rid of those cedars. There is no telling how much water would be around without them.

We went out to the lease to do some more work and setup some stands and feeders. I put a small feeder in a nice draw last week and the area was really worked over in one short week. It was so dry out there that we couldn't really see any tracks so we don't know if it is hogs eating the corn or deer. We really got a chance to check the place out and man are we pumped. We saw deer everywhere we went. We ended up putting out a total of 6 feeders to really start drawing in the wildlife. The hogs seem to be somewhat thick so I will be putting a couple of hog pipes this coming weekend, I guess hog season is about to open up for the kids.

We went to the lease yesterday morning to setup a couple of bow stands and make sure the feeders were running. I got there at 6:50am just as the sun was coming up so I parked at the front just to see what may come out. I wasn't there 10 min. when three does came out into the road along the north fence line. I started scanning the pastures and came back to the does just in time to see a huge deer bound across the road. I couldn't tell if it was a buck but it was twice as large as the doe standing in the road. I got my binoculars up and man, a nice 120 class buck just steps in the road and stands there looking my way. I ended up seeing 16 deer in just a few hours. I also put out a hog pipe so we can get some porkers on the stalk with the bows. We now have 9 feeders running on the 700 acres and the deer and hogs are really starting to come into the property. Can't wait till October.
