Hog Town Hoe DownWritten on: 05/26/2010 07:36 by: aussiejohn
48 hours in Texas to down as many hogs I can find! This Aussie found himself somewhere between Heaven and Hell in the hog hunting Counties of Nth West Texas U.S.A. where 225 out of 254 Counties have HUGE feral hogs with a population in Texas reaching 2,000,000, causing some $52 million in damage. Ranch owner and good friend Cheryl, needed some ferals exterminated, it was time to help her and to put the hammer down on some of those “World Class Texas Hogs”. It was early October; I had a 2 day window of opportunity before Elk & Mule deer hunts in Colorado, so I hit the ground running. The first thing I did upon arriving at Cheryl’s ranch was to study the sign and determine how fresh it was. I wanted to take advantage of these wild hogs as they can be creatures of habit with their repetitive behaviour and patterns.
It was like a hog-town hoe-down during the 48 hours with a grave yard of boars, sows and a few coyotes thrown for good measure. The biggest turned out to be 350plus lbs of fast and furious action on the run. 1st shot was a home run with a high shoulder hit, causing massive heart lung and spinal cord damage which brought the bear like creature crashing down. Considering a 28 hour international flight to get there, it would have been hell and a death wish to have slipped up or goofed with these monsters. With European monsters cross breeding you have to take care of what you might bump into. On this encounter the odds had worked in my favour and I was in heaven... ............... “This was the most fun I’d had all year with my clothes on” .........................
