The first weekend in March, hundreds of hunters and hog dogs will help feed Texans in need.

Scheduled for March 5-7, the Texas Dog Hunters Association’s annual Hunt for the Hungry is the largest charity hunt in the United States. Last year, the tournament brought in over 28,000 pounds of pork for Hunters’ Harvest. The TDHA hopes to break 30,000 pounds in 2010.

In addition to supporting an important cause, the Hunt for the Hungry is the richest hog hunting competition in the country.  The team with the five heaviest hogs will be awarded over $3,000 in cash and prizes. There are also bonus categories for longest tusks, heaviest boar, heaviest sow and more. In addition to the main dog and knife event, the TDHA has added a brand new bay and shoot contest.

Weigh-in will be held at the Lone Star Hunting and Working Dog Expo in Hallettsville. The Expo features vendors showing and selling everything from hunting gear and dog supplies to taxidermy services and ATVs. The TDHA has also recruited the top working dog professionals in Texas to give demonstrations on herding, blood trailing, trapping, obedience, raw feeding and more.

To sign up for the 2010 tournament, visit www.thenewtdha.com. In addition to pre-registration online and via mail, teams can sign up on Friday, March 5 from 3 to 6:30 p.m. at the William Baber Expo Center in Hallettsville. All teams must arrive at weigh-in by noon on Sunday, March 7. A complete set of rules is available on the TDHA web site
